Background of the Study
Auditing practices are crucial in ensuring transparency, accountability, and the efficient use of resources in non-governmental organizations (NGOs). NGOs play a significant role in addressing social and economic challenges, relying heavily on donor funding and public trust. In Nigeria, the growing demand for accountability in the nonprofit sector has underscored the importance of effective auditing practices (ICAN, 2024).
ActionAid Nigeria, as a leading NGO, conducts various development programs aimed at reducing poverty and inequality. To maintain credibility and ensure efficient fund utilization, the organization employs auditing practices that evaluate compliance, operational efficiency, and financial integrity. However, NGOs in Nigeria face unique challenges such as regulatory uncertainties, resource constraints, and the complexity of donor requirements, which may impact the effectiveness of their auditing systems.
This study explores auditing practices in Nigerian NGOs, using ActionAid Nigeria as a case study, to assess their effectiveness in promoting accountability and trust among stakeholders.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role of auditing in ensuring transparency, many Nigerian NGOs struggle with weak internal control systems, limited capacity to comply with regulatory requirements, and inconsistent audit practices. These challenges have led to instances of fund mismanagement and reduced donor confidence.
At ActionAid Nigeria, understanding the effectiveness of auditing practices is essential to maintaining its reputation and operational efficiency. This study examines the strengths and weaknesses of current auditing practices and provides insights for improving accountability mechanisms in the Nigerian NGO sector.
